Airbnb takes on NYE party rentals this year

Planning on hosting your New Years Eve party at a posh Airbnb in a nearby neighborhood, perhaps as an alternative to the apartment you’ve undoubtedly spent too much time in over the past year (or, even worse, a bar)? Well you might have to rethink things.

That’s because, according to a new platform report, Airbnb made the law this year by putting in place certain controls which will make it impossible for some to rent on Christmas Eve, in order to thwart “unauthorized” and “disruptive” parties.

It was announced, as of November 2, that:

  • All guests without a proven track record (that is, without a track record of positive reviews) will be prohibited from making overnight reservations across all of the listing listings.
  • Stricter restrictions will be rolled out on two-night bookings which may present “increased risk for disruptive parties” as NYE draws closer.

“We will leverage and scale up our technology that restricts some local and last minute bookings by customers without a history of positive Airbnb reviews,” the company said.

It is a defense system that Airbnb first piloted in 2020 on rentals in the United States, Canada, Australia, France, Spain and the United Kingdom. “About 243,000 guests Globally encountered these defenses when attempting to book ahead of NYE 2020, and we believe these efforts have met our goals of reducing disruptive parties, ”Airbnb said.

Similar policies were passed for July 4 and Halloween this year and have likely been successful, as they also extend the strategy to include Puerto Rico, Brazil, and New Zealand. This would all be part of the platform’s plan to extend their already “robust party prevention”Initiative (which, if you didn’t know it was a thing, you do it now).

The good news is that customers who To do have a history of positive reviews, don’t worry, as the newly implemented settings won’t affect their ability to book. So the moral of the story here? Don’t be an Airbnb asshole and jeopardize your good reputation with hosts. If you do, you could find yourself banned along with the other bad customers soliciting reviews on NYE 2022.
