NEW YORK (WPIX) – Thousands of people recently booked Airbnbs in Ukraine with no intention of traveling there.

All in an effort to get the money straight to war-torn Ukrainians as Russian troops continue to bombard the country. Volunteers around the world have booked Airbnb listings, transferred money to hosts, and sent messages of support through the platform.

The crowdfunding initiative gained popularity on social media last week. Attendees helped raise nearly $2 million in gross booking value on Thursday and Friday alone, according to Airbnb.

More than 61,000 nights have been booked in Ukraine by “guests” from around the world, including 34,000 nights booked by people based in the United States.

In support of the initiative, Airbnb announced that it will temporarily waive booking fees for hosts and guests on listings in Ukraine. The company also said it plans to house 100,000 Ukrainian refugees free of charge.
