Ryder Cup Home Rentals Turns ‘Cash Cow’ For Locals | WFRV Local 5

SHEYBOYGAN, Wisconsin (WFRV) – There is much more to this week’s Ryder Cup than golf. For the locals, it is becoming a cash cow.

“What have I got to lose?” Laura O’Hara said.

She scored her own “hole in one” this weekend. Like many of her neighbors, she rents her home to the thousands of people who are heading to Wisconsin for the Ryder Cup.

“We live in the center of everything about Kohler, and the money was good, and we had a place to stay, so it was kind of like a no-brainer,” she told Section Barrett Tryon. local 5.

On Monday, she was doing last-minute cleaning in the kitchen before her first group of guests arrived later this week.

” It’s a lot of work. Its a good job. It’s organizing, it’s cleaning. It’s something you should be doing in your home, ”added O’Hara.

If you were looking to rent a house for this week’s golf game, you might be out of luck. Many sites, like AirBnB, have been out of stock for months.

O’Hara worked with a third party company that specializes in renting homes for major sporting events, like golf tournaments.

“We have a 5 bedroom house. Basically you need clean sheets, clean towels, toiletries, the basics, ”she said. Additionally, she said she adds unique Wisconsin gifts to make her guests feel at home.

After the pandemic delays the big game for a year, the hard work seems to be paying off.

“We’re going to reap great benefits from it,” O’Hara said. “Get new appliances, save and invest. So it’s kind of nice to come out of COVID to get an extra bump in the money. “

Where do all the people who rent their homes go? While some are staying with families, like O’Hara, a majority have opted for vacations instead.
