The 13 Best Last Minute Vacation Rentals for Labor Day 2021

Hiiiiii. We know, we know. This summer didn’t exactly go as planned [twerk-cries in Delta] and although we were fortunate enough to have some much needed vaccinated galavants in June (were we that young?), now we are here: approaching autumn, uncertain future, still need rest and rest and a tub full of White Claw. Summer is in its last yawn, but we’re not ready to hang up our favorite beach towels just yet.

But hey! Labor Day is one thing, and one thing that’s coming soon (before you Google: Monday, September 6), giving us another chance to gather the buds – or just our sanity and a cooler full of sharp cheddar cheese – and find a last-minute rental for one more brain break. We won’t get too far from our bases, but that doesn’t mean we can’t find all of those Pinterest-level Airbnbs, Vrbo rentals (remember? These are the OGs of online rental, and always rad) and Plum Guide (the new highly aesthetic competitor to the Airbnb crown).

Whether you want to swim in Big Bear, California, or trip balls in upstate New York; experience the high life in a Chicago loft or line dance in Nashville, here are a bunch of homes to rent on our list for the weekend. And yes, there will be treehouses.

Austin, Texas

We’re almost always down with something called a “bungalow”, and this entire apartment – nicknamed “The Magical Tree House” – is no exception. Steps away from Austin’s iconic South Congress neighborhood, this groovy retro space is perfect for you and four of your friends to kick back and moan that you were born in the wrong decade, man.

Enjoy the classic bohemian cabin vibe of this A-frame getaway, from wood furnishings and whiskey-caramel tones to faux fur throws and board games. Maybe a soak in the hot tub after throwing another log in the woodstove? Or, as the owners suggest, “just brew a drink on the old-fashioned cocktail cart and play songs from the record collection.” (Damn, don’t twist your arms.)

Chicago, Illinois

Do you know what would be a great way to celebrate Labor Day? Spend the weekend without work in a “modern and friendly unit in the city center with optional parking space”. (Did you get us in, uh… parking space?) Chicago is another real city, and the only one that actually compares to New York in size. [Inbox explodes with Cleveland-related hate mail.] This industrial and modern apartment has it all: cool art, access to the building’s gym, a 4K Roku HDTV, and as much coffee and tea as you can drink.

Brookings, Oregon

This is where they filmed Twilight! Well, not really, but pretty much, we suppose? Stay at this beautiful seaside retreat and let yourself be “kissed by the waves and blessed by the sun” as the Big Man Upstairs intended. (Shout out to Hank, my owner.) Live with panoramic views of the sunset, fishing boats, and whale migrations from the living room. There is also a large open concept kitchen, but the scenery really is where it is.

Beachfront Retreat at Wild Blue Two; sleeps up to $ 2,250 / night in Vrbo

La Quinta, California

This is a much better alternative than staying at a La Quinta hostel on the side of a highway. It’s, like, a to touch more expensive, but the pool, insane cuisine, access to hike, and outdoor spaces are well worth it. The La Quinta Cove trail to Bear Creek also passes right in front of the property, which is a great way to work out and sweat the metric ton of frozen margs you consume next weekend.

Bella; up to 13 people, $ 1,501 / night at Plum Guide

Peshastin, Washington

Now this that’s where they filmed Twilight. (Wrong again – they filmed it in a town called Spoons, or something.) This treehouse is everything you wanted as a teenage girl, with a grill, cold water, a refrigerator, coffee maker, silverware, plates, bowls, glasses, bottle opener and coffee mugs. Description suggests bringing snowshoes, skis, mountain bikes and hiking boots to explore the beautiful 150 acres of private property and to ‘try your luck with the golden pan of Hansel Creek …. Blewett Pass has a long history of gold prospecting. {Gold pans are provided}. ”

Fancy some honky tonky, fernet and smoked bolognese sandwiches under the neon glow of Nashville? Of course you are. But when you’re done donning your electric jumper, it’ll be nice to head back to this bright, minimalist loft to take a break and admire the clumps of pampas grass before your next night of southern shenanigans.

Joshua Tree is where the vibes flow, there’s no doubt about it. We’ve compiled a comprehensive guide to the best rentals in the area to sow your desert oats, and this makes a nice addition with its minimalist decor and classic fireplace (I believe the correct term is “cowboy tub). Don’t forget the DMT.

I told you there would be enough treehouses for everyone. This little love cabin in the forest overlooks a year-round creek and feels far away from everyone (although it’s only 200 feet from the host’s main house). There’s even a hammock, campfire space, and a hanging bed underneath.

Because das more humid in Zermatt is so pleasant at this time of year, meine liebchen! Seriously, though … If one of the brothers is out there in Switzerland and looking to let off steam with that absolute banger from a notepad, send some pics. Can you imagine the Kodak moments that would perform on those cowhide stools, swapping stories by the mid-century fireplace? Nestled in the mountains, sipping some sweet Chasselas grapes in the hot tub while your friends yodel in the distance? The dream.
