Tug Hill Commission Webinar June 23: Regulation of Short-Term Rentals | Community Notes
WATERTOWN – Find out about short-term rentals and what a community should consider during a Tug Hill Commission sponsored webinar at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, June 23.
Attorneys Charles Malcomb and Alicia Legland, partners and associates of Hodgson Russ, LLP, respectively, will discuss short-term rentals, efforts to regulate them, case law interpreting these efforts, and advice on regulatory development.
With the advent of the sharing economy and its innovations, many regulatory challenges have arisen for all levels of government. Laws and regulations are generally far behind technological and societal development, often resulting in reactionary policies to address new challenges and opportunities. Short term rentals are a good example.
Tug Hill has seen the popularity of individual homeowners or investors explode using popular websites to rent rooms, single family homes and apartments for short periods of time, often resulting in significant income for homeowners. This change often has impacts on neighboring owners and the community as a whole. Many local codes have not kept pace with these developments.
